Two premises were rated 0 for food hygiene in September: Redhill Kebab House on Brighton Road and The Feathers in Merstham. Four more, in Reigate and Redhill, got a 1.
Two food businesses in the borough were given a food hygiene rating of 0, the lowest possible, after inspections in September. A 0 means “urgent improvement necessary”.
They are Redhill Kebab House, a takeaway at 15 Brighton Road, Redhill, inspected on 28 September, and The Feathers, listed as a restaurant at The Feathers Public House, 42 High Street, Merstham, inspected on 17 September. Both ratings are on the Food Standards Agency register.
Neither was on the register when we published our September roundup on 8 October. Nor were three of the four ratings of 1 given that month.
The ratings below 3
Ratings are set by Reigate and Banstead Borough Council’s food safety officers and published by the Food Standards Agency. Officers score three areas in points, where 0 is best and higher is worse. Confidence in management covers a business’s food safety systems and records, and 30 is the worst score it can get.
| Inspected | Business | Address | Rating | Hygiene / structure / management points |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 28 Sep | Redhill Kebab House | 15 Brighton Road, Redhill | 0 | 15 / 20 / 20 |
| 17 Sep | The Feathers | 42 High Street, Merstham | 0 | 15 / 15 / 30 |
| 17 Sep | Lion Thai Restaurant @ The Red Lion | 48 Linkfield Lane, Redhill | 1 | 15 / 15 / 20 |
| 4 Sep | Bru And Bear | Flint House, 13 Bell Street, Reigate | 1 | 10 / 15 / 20 |
| 3 Sep | The Kerala | 25 to 29 Church Street, Reigate | 1 | 10 / 15 / 20 |
| 2 Sep | New Lotus House | 10 Linkfield Corner, Redhill | 1 | 10 / 15 / 20 |
| 11 Sep | Solly Molly | The Stapley Building, 24B High Street, Horley | 2 | 10 / 15 / 10 |
A rating of 1 means “major improvement necessary” and a 2 means “improvement necessary”. All six premises rated 0 or 1 scored 20 or more for confidence in management. We reported New Lotus House’s 1 in an update to the September roundup on 8 October.
None of the seven has published a right to reply on the register. The register shows no re-inspection pending for any of them.

October so far: twelve 5s
Twelve ratings dated October are on the register so far, and every one is a 5, “very good” (FSA register):

What it means for you
- Check before you order. Every venue’s rating, date and scores are on the FSA register.
- A business can appeal a rating within 21 days. It can also ask for a re-inspection once it has made improvements, and publish a right to reply on the register.
- A 0 does not mean a venue must close. Officers can take enforcement action, but the rating itself records what they found on the day of the inspection.
- Worried about a food business? You can report a food problem to the FSA, which passes it to the council.
If you run one of the businesses named here and want to tell readers what has changed since the inspection, email us at hello@reigatenews.co.uk and we will add it.
