This week: M25 and M23 overnight closures

From National Highways’ road closure report, covering 6 to 12 August 2026:

  • M25 anticlockwise, J9 (Leatherhead) to J8 (Reigate): full overnight closures for concrete repairs, roughly 10pm to 5.30am, on the nights of Friday 7, Monday 10, Tuesday 11 and Wednesday 12 August, with traffic diverted via local roads. This is the one that matters here: the signed diversion brings motorway traffic down through the borough’s A roads overnight.
  • M25 clockwise, J6 (Godstone) to J7 (M23 interchange): overnight resurfacing closures on the nights of Friday 7, Monday 10 and Tuesday 11 August.
  • M23 northbound, J11 to J9 (Gatwick): overnight maintenance closures, 9pm to 6am, on the nights of 10, 11 and 12 August.
  • M23 southbound, J7 to J8: one overnight closure on Wednesday 12 August, covering the A23 approach at Dean Lane near Hooley.

Horley High Street: closed in phases until November

The biggest planned works in the borough are not an emergency but a rebuild. Under the Delivering Change in Horley Town Centre programme, Surrey County Council and Reigate & Banstead Borough Council are repaving and re-landscaping the High Street and the streets around it, Albert Road, Victoria Road, Lumley Road, Consort Way East and Yattendon Road included, at a cost of approximately £3 million (Surrey County Council scheme page).

The work is split into 11 phases and began in February 2026. As of the council’s mid-July update, phase 8 runs to mid-August with the High Street closed to vehicles, phases 9 and 1 follow through August, phase 10 runs September to November, and a final three-week phase lands in autumn or winter. Phased closures continue until early November 2026, with pedestrian access to shops maintained throughout. If you drive into Horley for the shops, park on the edge and walk the last stretch until the paving crews leave.

Smaller works around the borough

  • Rook Lane (B2031), Chaldon, just over the border in Tandridge, is closed for verge works from 27 July to 29 August 2026, and its signed diversion runs along the A23, A25 and A22, so expect a few extra HGVs on the borough’s A roads while it lasts (Surrey CC major roadworks).
  • Banstead High Street had its carriageway patched and resurfaced overnight between the Park Road and Bolters Lane roundabouts in late July; that work is now complete.

The key routes, and why closures bite here

The borough’s traffic runs on a simple skeleton. The M25 crosses the top, with Junction 8 at the foot of Reigate Hill its only direct borough junction; the M23 peels off at Junction 7 and runs down the eastern edge to Gatwick. The A217 drops south from the M25 through Banstead and down Reigate Hill into the town; the A23 threads Merstham, Redhill and Horley on its way to the airport; and the A25 runs east to west through Reigate town centre and on to Redhill. When the M25 or M23 closes overnight, the diversions use exactly these A roads, which is why a motorway closure you never drive past can still mean a queue outside your window at midnight. Reigate town centre’s own pinch point is the A217/A25 crossroads by the old town hall, where the one-way working around Bell Street and London Road concentrates everything.

Station parking: the commuter’s variable

If the roads are bad, the trains are the escape, and the difference between the borough’s two main station car parks is worth knowing. Both are operated by APCOA for the railway:

  • Reigate station (Station Approach, RH2 0BD): a small car park of 56 spaces, £6.90 for a weekday, £3.60 after 5pm, £6.60 at weekends, £26.60 for a week (APCOA Reigate). With so few spaces it fills early on weekday mornings; the station itself has no lifts, so check access if you need step-free travel (National Rail).
  • Redhill station (Redstone Hill, RH1 1RB): the serious commuter car park, around 350 spaces with 6 EV chargers, £10.90 for a weekday, £5.60 after 5pm, £9.90 at weekends, £39.20 for a week, ANPR-run and open around the clock (APCOA Redhill). Redhill station is fully step-free with lifts (National Rail).

Both operators add a small convenience fee per tariff, and prices move periodically; these are the August 2026 rates.
